Fish! Fish! Fish!

At home Hannah and Nicky poured the fish into a small fish bowl. They watched it swim. The fish swam very slowly.

"Fish are boring," Hannah said.

Nicky nodded in agreement.

"Let's watch TV," Hannah said.

"No TV," Mrs. Taylor said. "It's dinner time."

"What's for dinner?" Nicky asked.

"Fish sticks," Mrs. Taylor said. "Your favorite."

Hannah and Nicky loved fish sticks. They could eat them every day for a whole year.

"So how do you like your new pet?" Mr. Taylor asked. He had a whole pile of fish sticks on his plate. He loved fish sticks too. With lots and lots of ketchup.

"It's boring," Hannah said.

"It doesn't do much," Nicky said.

"What do you expect the fish to do?" Mr. Taylor asked. "It's just a fish."

Hannah and Nicky pretty much forgot about the fish, except when Mrs. Taylor told them to feed it. And clean the bowl.

"I wish we had a dog," Nicky said, sprinkling the fish food into the bowl.

Hannah looked through the bowl and stared at the fish.

"You are so boring," she said.

One day Hannah and Nicky were at the pet store buying more fish food when they came across a brand new kind of fish food. The label read

Protean Fish Food Specially formulated to invigorate
your fish! Recommended by the Council of Invigorated Fish

"What's invigorate?" Nicky asked the pet store owner.

"It means make the fish more powerful. Give it more energy. Add pep," the pet store owner said.

"Pep. That's what our fish needs," Nicky said. "Let's buy some."

Hannah agreed.

The instructions read

Give your fish one sprinkle a week for a healthy and
active fish. Only one sprinkle. This is very potent stuff.
	      We mean ONE sprinkle. Honest.

"What does potent mean?" Nicky asked Hannah.

"I don't know," Hannah said. "Maybe it means the same thing as invigorate."

Hannah sprinkled the fish food over the water. The fish came up and nibbled at the food. Then it swam back to the bottom of the bowl.

"Didn't work," Hannah said. "Still boring."

"Give it some more," Nicky said.

Hannah read the instructions again. She looked at the fish. She shrugged. Hannah sprinkled more food into the bowl.

"More! More! More!" Nicky yelled, dancing around.

Hannah sprinkled more, more, more. And more and more. The fish bowl was filled with fish food. It was hard to see the fish. Then they saw it. It was eating. And eating. And eating. Something was happening. The fish began swimming faster, faster, faster. It swam so fast the water began to bubble. The fish swam so fast, it looked like there were two fish, three fish, four fish, eight fish, sixteen -- so many the whole bowl was filled top to bottom with fishes. And they were growing! Bigger and bigger and bigger!

"The bowl is going to blow up!" screamed Hannah, jumping up and down.
